Below are some answers to the most asked questions, about the differences between vpn, proxy, smart dns etc.
While most of you will already know all this, you will find there’s a stagering amount of people who don’t have a clue.

So if you already know everything there is to know about all these different types of anonimity technology Great!
Well done you! But if you’re only just learning about protecting yourself online. Then there’s some things you need to know.

How does a VPN work & what does the service normally provide?

A VPN is short for “Virtual Private Network”. It is a secure encrypted connection between your computer and a hosts servers.
As a user connected to a vpn service,  you would use your internet normally, only this time, your internet connection will be secure And anonymous. While connected, your real IP address will change and you will appear to be at a different location in the world.

For example, you could appear to be in UK, US, Germany, Canada or Hong Kong depending which relay servers you wanted to connect to. When connected you will experience internet freedom like never seen before.

If you are in a country with internet restrictions, you would simply be able to bypass them.
For example if connected to a service thats located in the USA you could watch freely all US TV networks and hulu/netflix.

The main purpose though is to secure you’re privacy when surfing online, or downloading content that some might say
Is copyrighted, it all depends on the reasons for a VPN. We all have our own personal reasons for wanting anonymity.

Is it legal to use a VPN?

Yes, it is legal to use a VPN. Many companies use the technology to allow remote employees access to their networks remotely.
Most all company’s now use the same technology, and provide you internet access over the VPN connection.

They are currently trying to get VPN’s banned because they can be used to access GEO Restricted services like netflix/hulu.
The industry doesn’t want people from the other side of the world, accessing the same service their already paying for
In a different location. So while VPN’s might be legal for now. Most services are now being made to block them.

Will the VPN connection work in my country?

Most ISP’s like 99.9% of them do allow you to use a VPN. And most company’s that provide the services have actually
Had them tested in many countries such as UAE, Qatar, Oman, Belize, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, China, Yemen,
Jordan, Cyprus, France, Italy and the list keeps going.

Two countries that may be an issue depending on the internet service provider
being used and those include Iran & Syria. But lets face it most people use them to browse US TV station networks.

Most providers decent providers, allow a trial service to see if it works with you’re ISP.
IF you find a decent provider simply ask them for a trial, and explain why you need one, to test if you’re ISP allows it.

What are some of the benefits? What can I use your VPN service for?

You would be secure and anonymous online and depending on your location you will see added benefits. For example, if you are in Belize, Oman and UAE you can use Skype normally to make international calls, this is blocked if you are not using most services. If you are in China, KSA, Qatar, Thailand etc you can access blocked sites including adult websites. Geoblocking can be overcome too and you can watch BBC iplayer, Netflix, Hulu etc from abroad. Those are just a few of the benefits. There is many many more, including keeping you’re surfing habits private away from the NSA/ISP/Governments.

Is a VPN Connection the same as a Proxy websites??

Both the technologies will change your IP address. But a VPN would encrypt all your internet traffic and all your internet applications will route traffic via the secure connection. A proxy is mainly browser based and many sites will not load via a proxy browser. Also, most VPN service is much faster than a proxy. And finally since a Proxy is Web Browser based/controlled.

You CANNOT watch USA TV Network Stations, Hulu/Netflix as their scripts can detect any kind of proxy via HTTP. But you can easly access blocked/censored websites like the piratebay/kickass and other video streaming websites.

Will my ISP see when I’m connected to VPN?

All your ISP will see is a secured and encrypted connection to what ever service provider you choose to go with.
They cannot see the traffic or decipher any of your communication. Due to how the nature of most VPN’s actually work.

What is the main difference between a Proxy and VPN Service?

While both a Proxy and VPN service will re-route your internet traffic and change your IP, they function slightly differently.

Think of a Proxy as a Web Filter. The proxy settings are applied to your internet browser whether you’re using MSIE, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Etc. When browsing the internet through a proxy server, all benefits with that server are used, for example, (Security, Speed, and Geographic Location). The proxy will only secure traffic via the internet browser using the proxy server settings.

Unlike a Proxy, a VPN service provider(Virtual Private Network) encrypts all of your traffic, replacing your ISP and routing ALL traffic through the VPN server, including all programs and applications. This also will use all benefits of the VPN server such as (Speed, Geopgraphic Location, and Security). The VPN can be easily connected or disconnected with the click of a button.

In conclusion, a proxy server is completely browser based, and is not as compatible with certain web pages that use non-browser technology such as: Comedy Central,Zatoo, Fox OD, and Sky Player. However, a VPN will work with ALL internet based services, but will offer less choice on which applications will get run through your ISP, as with the VPN, everything is routed through that server when connected.

So for just browsing around blocked websites via HTTP use a proxy server there’s millions to choose from. But for encrypting and securing you’re traffic and for watching geo-restricted content in the USA for example, use a VPN service provider.

What is Smart DNS?

Smart DNS service gives you the possibility to unblock geo-restricted websites that don’t show their content to users with other countries IP addresses than the ones the sites originate from. For instance: HBOGO, Crackle si iTV and many more. There is a huge list of those kind of media websites and Smart DNS is a very easy method to access regional restricted websites from anywhere in the world.

VPN allows you to unblock just one country at a time, while Smart DNS gives you the possibility to unblock multiple countries at the same time. As it usually provide its users with a huge list of pre-unblocked media websites.

The disadvantage of VPN is that unlike Smart DNS, VPN doesn’t allow you to benefit from the original speed that comes from your internet provider. With VPN your speed will depend on many factors and it’s know that it is usually 30% lower than original one. Smart DNS allows you to use your internet providers original speed, without many changes in your device. No loss of speed, meaning that you won’t experience buffering issues at all.

Smart DNS is easy to setup, without making major changes in your device. It takes less time and less effort to set it up. Unlike VPN, Smart DNS works on more devices than VPN does.

Okay! The VPN service is used in order to get a better personal security while being connected to a public WiFi, while Smart DNS offers you limitless access to your favorite media websites where you can watch your favorite TV shows, listen to your favorite Radio Station, see your favorite Movies etc.

So, if you think that Smart DNS service will meet your needs whether you are far away from US or UK, then you definitely should go for Smart DNS service. This way, every time you’ll try to access BBC or Netflix, you’ll never get the “This video is not available in your region” message. More than that, you don’t lose your speed. At the same time VPN is popular for it’s method to hide your IP, but in case if you intend to unblock websites using VPN, you would experience buffering problems and will never have the fast speed as you would have with Smart DNS.

One of the biggest advantages Smart DNS service comes with is the fact that it offers direct access to the pre-unblocked sites with no loss of speed and it directly unblocks each site. And normally these types of services are much cheaper than VPN standard packages. Which is a bonus!

How does Smart DNS work?

By changing your DNS. This way we can reroute your data and websites will “think” that you are eligible to access their content. We do that by unblocking each site in particular. This technology will not change your IP.

What websites will I be able to unblock?

Using Smart DNS, you are able to unblock almost all websites that are restricted only to US, UK or Poland.

Does Smart DNS affect my speed?

This is one of the beauty of this technology  it almost does not affect your speed.

Will my connection be encrypted?

No. With Smart DNS all data is sent directly to your device and it is not encrypted (unless you are visiting a https site).

Will my IP be hidden/changed?

No. Smart DNS do not change or hide your IP.

What is the difference between Smart DNS and VPN?

VPN technology changes and hides your IP, encrypts your connection and automatically unlock sites giving you the possibility to surf anonymously, to be sure that you are safe while working with your bank accounts or while you are connecting to the Internet using unsecured Wi-Fi network.

Smart DNS is made just for unblocking websites. It does not offer IP hiding and encryption but it has better speeds when streaming video/audio.

How do you connect to Smart DNS? Username? Password?

Actually no, Smart DNS usees another authentication methods on Smart DNS service so you don’t have a password and username. Instead it uses a unique Smart DNS key that you should use for signing in into the software. This key is unique and you should not share it with anyone.

Can I change my Netflix region?

Most Smart DNS picks up on the region you’re currently on. And if the US version can be connected too
It will route you directly though to that. (Since US netflix carries over 65% more content then europe versions)

How many devices can I use simultaneously with Smart DNS service?

Normally You can use as many devices as you want as long as they are in the same network and have the same external IP.

What is Transparent HTTP proxy and what is Transparent DNS Proxy?

You might not know it but your ISP might be proxying all your web/http traffic through their transparent proxies.

Transparent HTTP proxy

Transparent proxying (also known as interception proxying/caching) is gaining popularity with more and more ISPs. With transparent HTTP proxy, the user wouldn’t need to specify any proxy details to his browser or anywhere else – all web HTTP traffic will be always forced to go through the proxy server. It involves intercepting packets that normally would go directly to web servers, and redirecting them to go through their proxy servers and then to the web servers.

Transparent DNS proxy

Some ISP’s are now using a technology called ‘Transparent DNS proxy’. Using this technology, they will intercept all DNS lookup requests (TCP/UDP port 53) and transparently proxy the results. This effectively forces you to use their DNS addresses and you are not able to change them.

Thats it! All the questions that’s been asked so many times over the year has now finally been answered!
We hope you learned quite a lot from this page. Remember all VPN / Smart DNS services can be different.
Don’t expect them to offer the same thing’s from 1 provider to the next. Be Smart and shop around for the best deals.
